Z4 Ad Skids to a Halt

Posted by Stephen Corby at 3:58 pm on Monday June 29, 2009

BMW Z4 PaintWell, the spinsters and do-gooders of Australia’s advertising watchdog are at it again. Clearly bored with life and their stamp collections, the powers that be at advertising’s Wet Blanket HQ have decided to ban the TV commercial for BMW’s new Z4, claiming that the driving stunts portrayed in the ad broke Australian road rules.

Theoretically the stunts could have broken Aussie road rules, if anyone in Australia actually drove around on giant canvases covered in paint. Pro Hart is dead, so not likely. The ad in question features a Z4 driving in a warehouse with paint-laden tyres, creating a rubber-streaked artwork of sorts. What’s next? Banning Sorbent ads because they promote toilet humour? Has the world gone mad or is this another example of extreme censorship? Do we need these watchdogs or are we smart enough to decide right from wrong ourselves?

You tell us, we want to hear your thoughts.

This is so stupid. The people that baned this add are clearly getting bored and need to get out and get a life.

Which law was broken? When was an Australian road in as good a condition as the floor of this warehouse? Why are these people allowed to breed?

my god, has the world gone nuts? its alright to show the horrors of war and the violence around the world on the nightly news. But ooh no, a car driving in paint!!!!! OH MY GOD lock up your daughters its too much of a bad example…. so to all those people out there thinking of doing this, thank the media watchdog because it might have just saved your life…or a set of brand new tyres on your new shiny Z4

Oh dear a paint brush might be injured if the car drove over the canvas, how bloody rediculous is this too ban an ad clearly not breaking road rules? The car isn’t on a road at all so how can this be breaking the law? It’s breaking the law if it was on public roads.

Must admit, the ad was pretty atrocious, but only because it was pointless and stupid. What the f*ck is with all these nanny-state idiots trying to put a big bubble around everyone? It is SO patronising, just the same as how they are trying to implement that new internet censorship thingo… what a joke.

Of course to prevent any deaths the armed guards would only be armed with words instead of weapons because that would be the safer alternative. This advertisement breaks road rules does it? i see and i suppose that the V8 supercars do too? or Le Mans? what about the ads for adult match maker? Or mobile porn ads? surely they do more damage?

First time I’ve seen the ad… didn’t thrill me. (It struck me as a bit of a wank, much like some BMW drivers. But the best car ad ever was the one for the launch of this esteemed magazine, and I still laugh out loud when I see it, so BMW had a lot to live up to.)

But for the love of gawd, now that I’ve seen the latest Boring Materialistic Wanker ad, I’m still not screaming out the front door with spraycans for my homies to squirt the tyres to leave a paint trail. (Would that even work? Spraying the tyres just before burning-out/burnout-ing? I know about the coloured-rubber-makes-col oured-smoke tyres. Hmm. Off on a tangent, anyone?)

Doesn’t it shit you? The way that laws & rules & regulations are set to keep the lowest common denominator safe? When they are too stupid to keep themselves safe? And then they breed stupid children who need a pedestrian crossing between them & their high school because they can’t even cross a road safely???

Do any of us normal people actually stick to the suggested speed signs on country highways? No? And why not? Because a blind man could negotiate a 170 degree corner on a highway at 45km an hour, that’s why, and those of us with a minor understanding of how a car works can handle a bit higher speed than that. And if you’re that freakin’ hopeless that you stick to, or (insert shuddering here) BELOW that suggested limit, you below to the lowest common denominator, and you PISS THE REST OF US OFF!

Same goes for most rules (but particularly those made by wowsers & the RTA). Set for the lowest common denominator, and the rest of us are frustrated beyond belief.

The Darwin Awards mob dig the concept. Let the stupid ones kill themselves, and let the rest of us decide if we want to do burnouts in a factory or not.

I don’t even know if I’m on-topic here, but having to abide by rules that were set so that the shallow end of the gene pool doesn’t drown… it does my head in.

I’d dearly love to meet someone who strenuously objected to this ad. To listen to their reasoning with a straight face would be more challenging than not tracking down & killing the Toyota Stuntdriver team who cancelled my lesson coz they were double-booked. (No offence to Little Bits coz he freaks out when I mention ‘tracking down & killing’.)

I read about the ban in the paper this morning and was completely baffled. Surely there’s nothing illegal about driving like that when it’s not on a road?

I didn’t like the ad much myself (I was always mildly disappointed that the “artwork” was rubbishy abstractism rather than an actual image, which would have been quite clever), but I certainly don’t see any reason to ban it.

Malibu Stacey – Unfortunately, laws need to be made for the sake of the lowest common denominator.

I personally wouldn’t be too traumatised if we let nature take its course and certain people managed to remove themselves from the gene pool in an neat and elegant fashion, but stupid people do have the nasty tendency towards taking other people out with them.

The laws aren’t there to protect the idiots, they’re to protect everyone ELSE from the idiots.

So the RTA’s speeding (No one thinks big of you) which shows burnouts and speeding (on the road), should be banned also?
What about the Yamaha ad where the bike gets up on one wheel?
What about the holden Ute ad where he’s doing donuts in the dirt?

Come on Aussies.. this is pathetic and embarrassing.

The writer of this article fails to understand the basic elements of controlling human populations for hundreds of years. That is to keep people ignorant, and to maintain fear in the public. In this case, that would mean not teaching them how to four-wheel drift, not even showing them that such a manouvre is possible, and maintaining the notion that cars will kill you if you don’t behave.
It is far easier and cheaper to treat all people like this, than to allow all of us free thinking, and then have to deal with the idiots who couldn’t handle freedom of thought.

If your read (the real) Mr Corby’s new blog regarding Audis, BMWs and undergarments then you could be forgiven for thinking this ad was banned for showing a less artistic type of skidmark…ahem.

The Advertising Standards Board show how thick they really are when they say
“The Board noted that the advertisement could be modified relatively easily be removing the intentional skidding or four wheel drift that the Board considered to be problematic”

That would be a car standing still then wouldn’t it?

    Phuck me!
I’m a little behind the news so this is the first I’ve heard of the ad being banned and it makes me cringe to be an Australian.
Seriously, whiny little bitches like these need to take a teaspoon of cement and harden the phuck up.
This is one of the few ads I actually like, it doesn’t change my low opinion of BMW, but it appeals to the artistic side of me, how cool would it be to do that? So wait, I’ll grab my giant 300 foot canvas and paints that I keep in the back shed, lay it out in George Street and do doughies whilst dodging the oncoming traffic and peds. Come off it for christsake!

This is more of the same sh!t the media keeps dishing up to us, controlling the masses. Like Tracey “Miss Piggy” Grimshaw, who gives a phuck what Gordon Ramsay called you, you make your living out of bullying as many people you can in a week; talk about the pot calling the kettle black. HTFU and learn to take a joke and roll with the punches. They are seriously turning us in to a nation of politically correct nancies.
It’s a wonder they even allow TG to be shown here in oz. Though I have noticed that the TGA boys seem to be a lot more PC than the TGUK boys, which is another reason why TGA sucks.

    Phuck I hate the media.
