Hyundai’s Genesis Coupe

The Genesis Coupe is the hottest car ever built by Hyundai, but we’re not getting it.

We can tell you’re doubtful; yes, there was once a time when the only reason Hyundai and hot would be used in the same sentence was if an engine in an Excel caught fire. And yes, Hyundai has tried its hand at sporty before – the Tiburon was horribly weak at just 123kW and the less said about the old Coupe, the better.

But we promise, this looks good. Very good, in fact. And international reviewers agree. The top-level Genesis is powered by a 231kW, 3.6-litre V6 putting out 361Nm. It’s also good for a 0-100km/h time of 6.3 seconds. And it’s rear wheel drive. And it looks good.

But while Hyundai is claiming we’re not getting one in Australia because of the left-hand drive conversion, they shipped one to the recent launch of the i30cw wagon. Our Korean friends also rolled out a driver -  a black-suited imposter who refused to speak or take his helmet off. On a side note, does anyone know any good copyright lawyers?

Here’s our sneaky (and, frankly, terrible) footage of the Genesis Coupe in action in the Hunter Valley. And be sure to check out our gallery of the Genesis and The Stag.

I do love a good intellectual debate mentioning hyundais exiles (sic).

So, my Heidi the Hyundai Elantra has got a big tough older brother, nah, sister who has popped out of the woodwork, eh? The footage looks promising. It appears to have the goods, and I’m as surprised as anyone else about that. It’s alright side-on, but I reckon the front of it looks like an abortion.

What price bracket would it be in, if we were to get it here? And how would all those 17 year olds finance it after trading in their Excel for $200?

The Stag. You must be joking.

PS: Does anyone know where I can get some bright pink blue paint?

    Malibu,
You can get bright pink blue paint at SuperCheap Auto, just next to the spoliers.

Sweet! Thanx, Canberra Reader, I can kill 2 birds with 1 stone… I’ll get some bright pink blue paint & a spolier at the same time.

Can I just say something about Hyundai? No matter what crap they build, or what promising vehicle they dangle in front of our noses & then say ‘nah, you can’t have it in Oz’, I still hold a special place in my heart for the bloke who said ‘hey, how about we make the headlights turn off automatically when the ignition is turned off… and then make the parking lights turn off when you remove the key?’.

I don’t know if it’s standard in all models, and I’m not usually one to forget to turn the lights off anyway, but I think that’s a clever little detail that should’ve been thought by manufacturers yonks ago.

Hyundais are actually not as bad as you think, they’ve come along in leaps and bounds in recent years and, while not setting the world alight with anything even resembling excitement, they make solid, credibvle, cheap(ish) cars. Not sure about this Genesis though, why don;t they just stick to what they know

its a corner of the market thats been neglected. A cheapish rear wheel drive car that is accessable and “tuneable”, torana gemini cortina etc. It will be a winner, especially if it was a different manufacturer, but cudos to them for knowing the market and building something different to the FWD crap.

A good looking, (relatively) fast and cheap Hyndai? That’s unpossible!

Despite my predispositions about Hyndais, I’ll look towards this with an open (and ashamedly eager) mind.

Actually it should be ‘I think that’s a clever little detail that should’ve been thought HAVE by manufacturers yonks ago.’

    Learn grammar.

How to compair Topgear Australia to a Karoke show. If you like to hear random people sing cover songs and do a bad job at it, then Topgear Australia will be perfect for you. There advise is terriably coppied from th U.K. Topgear and there is noooooo Australian humor. Do they disagree with one another, no it is like watching a boring chat show. Every car to them is great. C’mom it is ok hate a car for the sake of it. There challenges were lame and the presenter’s were bad at showing it. I can a better job at them put together, and that is saying somthing.

Will they ever test cars that 90% of the world can afford no its only super cars.

They haven’t done a monster truck speacial or even a hot rod show that would be interesting and imaginative for them so it isn’t poosible for them to think outside the box.

steve2385, can you stop putting the same crap comment everywhere, I’m sick of choking on your incorrectly spelt words as a I read your pointless posts. Some people want to post about actual blogs, and shouldn’t be forced to read your garbage every time. Oh, and please learn to spell. I know it seems a dying art, but it might make you slightly more popular, though I doubt it.

I agree with ???, don’t say anything unless you own one. And I do, and it’s a fantastic car. Handles nice, rides a bit stiff, great power and affordable. Not to mention this will break into a drift as easy as touching a button.

For you information, Marls, Hyudnai isn’t Japanese.

As far as the Japs are concerned, well, it took Holden 35 years to figure out the efficiency of VVT-i which the Japanese first implemented into their vehicles. Learn a lesson from Pearl Harbour. The Japanese are out there and they are bigger, better and faster.

    PS: Hyundai is Korean.

I had Excel and I had Golf before that. Excel was better than golf. Those who bash Hyundai are a bunch of arrogant ignorants. Stupid third world immigrants with no knowledge about cars, despite their primitive boasting. And shit bad grammar/spelling. As if we didn’t know how stupid 3rd world immigrants can be (this includes brits fo every colour nowadays claiming to be a “britt”)

Hey Mr eurolegend, your comment on Hyundai is ok but if you start making nasty, racist comments against people you don’t even know, you might find yourself in trouble mate.

I think many Hyundai haters are not qualified to judge Hyundai cars until they drive one for themselves and own one.

Some of these haters probably don’t even know how to service their own car, let alone know how the guts and mechanics of a car works. (if you actually do, than congratulations, you’re an exception). Their knowledge about cars goes as far as a Fast and Furious movie or a video game.

I’m qualified to comment on Hyundai as I’ve driven and serviced mine for 8 years and it’s still going as smooth as day 1.
